Five Tips for Summer Wellness from Key West Bight Marina

1. Stay hydrated

First and foremost, with record high temperatures this summer and the increased outdoor activities available in the summer months, it’s more important than ever to stay properly hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of water or other hydrating beverages with electrolytes throughout the day to replenish lost fluids. You can also consume hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables with high water content. And when it comes to staying hydrated, if you are drinking alcohol, remember to drink responsibly and pack extra water to balance out the alcohol, which can dehydrate you. It’s a good idea to carry a water bottle with you, and you aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, and more if you are particularly active.

2. Protect your skin

It’s no secret that sunburns and excessive sun exposure can be harmful to your skin. When you’re out and about this summer, be sure to apply sunscreen thoroughly before going spending time outside, even on cloudy days. Wear protective clothing, such as hats and sunglasses, and seek shade during peak sun hours.

To best protect your skin, apply sunscreen with a high SPF before going outside to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply sunscreen every two hours or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating. Additionally, wear protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats and lightweight, long-sleeved shirts when possible.

3. Stay active

Even though it’s very hot, you can still have fun and stay active. Regular exercise not only improves physical health but also boosts mood and mental well-being, so it’s good to stay active all year round, whether indoors or outside. If you’re outdoors, choose shaded areas or go for water-based activities like swimming. Listen to your body and avoid pushing yourself too hard in extreme heat.

4. Eat nutritious foods

One great thing about summer is the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Stay at your healthiest by incorporating healthy foods into your diet to provide your body with essential vitamins and minerals. By giving your body the right fuel, it’ll make everything else you do more a more enjoyable experience. These fresh fruits and vegetables also help you stay hydrated!
